The Influence of Nurses¡¯ Knowledge and Preventive Attitude on Practice of Preventive Nursing for Dysphagia

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify geriatric hospital nurses¡¯ knowledge, attitudes and practice of preventive nursing for dysphagia and to search out the predictable factors of preventive nursing practice.

Method: The participants were 114 nurses working at the 10 geriatric hospitals. Data were collected between September 10 and October 10, 2012 using the questionnaire developed by the researcher on the basis of related literature, and it consisted of knowledge, preventive attitudes, and practice of preventive nursing. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program.

Result: The mean score of preventive attitudes and practice of preventive nursing for dysphagia were a moderate level, while knowledge was a comparatively high level. The most predictable factor of preventive nursing practice was nurses¡¯ preventive attitudes toward dysphagia (¥â=.392, P£¼.001).

Conclusion: The result of this study indicates that the role cognition of nurse manager would be important to improving preventive nursing practice and to taking positive attitudes.
